Ridgeview's 2009 Science Bowl

Ridgeview's 2009 Science Bowl Team 1 attended the National Science Bowl Competition in Washington, DC, April 30 - May 5, 2009.

To qualify, the team first won the Rocky Mountain Regional Competion in February. Of the 24 teams that competed, Ridgeview's team was in 8th place at the end of the round robin portion and was therefore the final qualifier for the double elimination rounds. To win, the team, consisting of captain Ben Michaud, Ryan Hitchman, David Chiavetta, Westin Webb, and Sarah Hamilton, proceeded to beat all three teams to which it had lost earlier in the day: Peak to Peak Charter School, Fairview High School (Boulder), and Poudre High School. (Poudre and Fairview teams had placed first and second at the regional competitions for the past three years. The 2007 Poudre team went on to win the National competition and the 2008 Fairview team was the 4th place team there.) Ridgeview was undefeated in the double elimination rounds, winning the final round on the last question in a nail-biter against Poudre.

At the National competition, Ridgeview had a winning record in the round robin competition, but did not qualify for the double elimination rounds. However, almost all of the other 63 teams competing were from much larger schools.

In addition to the actual competition, the National trip included visits to a number of monuments, to several Smithsonian museums, and to the U.S. Capitol. At the Capitol, Ridgeview's team was congratulated by Representative Betsey Markey, who also gave the team a personal, after-hours tour of the Capitol Rotunda and Statuary Hall.

The team's trip to the National competition was paid for by the Regional Competition sponsor, WAPA, based in Loveland, CO. Ridgeview also received more than $1000 from the Shell corporation in recognition of the team's academic achievement.

"The Ridgeview Classical School in Fort Collins has been rated among the top three schools in Colorado since it was founded in 2001. Its success stands as a sharp rebuke to the dominant anti-intellectual pedagogy of most American schools."

E.D. Hirsch, The Making of Americans.
